Verify other people

Confirm once that a colleague is really who they say they are, so Letro can show you a green shield next to them from then on.

Security note: Encryption guarantees no one else can read your messages. Verifying a person adds the other half — proof that the account you're messaging genuinely belongs to who you think it does.

Why verify people

Anyone can set a display name and photo. Verification is the reliable way to know you're talking to the real person and not an impersonator. When you verify someone, you compare a short code (or scan a QR code) once. After that, Letro marks them as verified and warns you if their identity ever changes.

This matters most when you're about to share something sensitive with someone for the first time.

On Web & Desktop

  1. Open a chat with the person, or open the silo info / their profile.
  2. Select the person's name to open their profile, then choose Verify (or Verify user).
  3. Letro shows a set of emoji (or numbers). Over a channel you trust — in person, or on a call where you recognize their voice — check that you both see the same codes.
  4. If they match, select They match on both sides. The person now shows a green shield / verified badge.

On iOS

  1. Open the chat, then tap the person's name or avatar to open their profile.
  2. Tap Verify.
  3. Compare the emoji together over a trusted channel, or use Scan QR code.
  4. Confirm they match — the person is now verified.

On Android

  1. Open the chat, then tap the person's name or avatar to open their profile.
  2. Tap Verify.

Good to know

  • Verify over a channel you already trust. Compare the codes in person or on a voice/video call where you recognize the person — not over the same text chat you're trying to verify, and never by having them send you the code.
  • If the codes don't match, don't confirm. A mismatch can mean an impersonation or interception attempt. Stop and confirm the person's identity another way.
  • Verify each person once. Letro remembers it. You'll only be asked again if their identity is reset — which triggers an alert. See Digital identity & reset alerts.
  • Both of you benefit. Verification is mutual — once done, each of you sees the other as verified.
