Moderate a silo

Keep a silo safe by reporting content, removing messages, and removing or banning members.

Security note: Moderation controls what people see and who can take part going forward. It does not break encryption or hand message content to Letro — everything stays end-to-end encrypted, and you act on messages you can already read as a member of the silo.

Most moderation actions need a role above regular member. Removing messages, removing (kicking) members, and banning require Moderator or Admin. Reporting content is open to everyone. See Roles & permissions to check or change who holds each role.

Report a message

Reporting flags a message for a silo admin to review. It does not delete the message or notify the sender.

On Web & Desktop

  1. Hover over the message you want to flag.
  2. Click the (more options) button that appears.
  3. Choose Report.
  4. Add a short reason if prompted, then confirm.

On iOS

  1. Press and hold the message.
  2. Tap (more options).
  3. Tap Report.
  4. Add a reason if prompted, then confirm.

On Android

  1. Press and hold the message.
  2. Tap (more options).
  3. Tap Report.
  4. Add a reason if prompted, then confirm.

Remove a message

Removing (also called redacting) hides a message's content from everyone in the silo from now on. You need Moderator or Admin to remove other people's messages; anyone can remove their own.

On Web & Desktop

  1. Hover over the message.
  2. Click the (more options) button.
  3. Choose Remove.
  4. Add an optional reason and confirm.

On iOS

  1. Press and hold the message.
  2. Tap (more options).
  3. Tap Remove.
  4. Add an optional reason and confirm.

On Android

  1. Press and hold the message.
  2. Tap (more options).
  3. Tap Remove.
  4. Add an optional reason and confirm.

Remove or ban a member

Removing (kicking) a member takes them out of the silo, but they can be re-invited or rejoin if the silo allows it. Banning removes them and blocks them from coming back until you unban them. Both need Moderator or Admin.

On Web & Desktop

  1. Open the silo and click the silo name to open Silo info.
  2. Choose People (or Members).
  3. Select the member you want to act on.
  4. Choose Remove from silo to kick, or Ban to block re-entry.
  5. Add an optional reason and confirm.

On iOS

  1. Tap the silo name to open Silo info.
  2. Tap People (or Members).
  3. Tap the member you want to act on.
  4. Tap Remove from silo to kick, or Ban to block re-entry.
  5. Add an optional reason and confirm.

On Android

  1. Tap the silo name to open Silo info.
  2. Tap People (or Members).
  3. Tap the member you want to act on.
  4. Tap Remove from silo to kick, or Ban to block re-entry.
  5. Add an optional reason and confirm.

Good to know

  • Removing a message hides its content going forward — it stops new readers from seeing the text or media. It does not guarantee the message was never seen, copied, or screenshotted before you acted.
  • You can only act on what your role allows. If you don't see Remove, Ban, or member actions, you're likely a regular member — ask a silo admin. See Roles & permissions.
  • Kick vs. ban: a kicked member can return if the silo is public or if someone re-invites them. A banned member cannot return until you Unban them from the same member menu.
  • Banning does not delete their past messages. Remove those separately if needed.
  • Reports go to silo admins, not to the sender and not to Letro. The sender isn't told they were reported.
  • Actions like removing and banning are recorded in the silo timeline so other admins can see what happened.
