Send & format messages

Type, send, format, mention, reply to, edit, remove, and forward messages in any Letro conversation.

Security note: Every message you send in Letro is end-to-end encrypted by default — only the people in the conversation can read it. Editing or removing a message changes what people see from that point on, but it can't guarantee no one already read or copied the original.

On Web & Desktop

Send a message

  1. Open a conversation and click the message box at the bottom.
  2. Type your message.
  3. Press Enter to send. To add a new line without sending, press Shift + Enter.

Format text

  1. Select the text you want to style. A small formatting toolbar appears.
  2. Choose a style: bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, code block, or quote.
  3. Prefer the keyboard? Use Ctrl/Cmd + B for bold and Ctrl/Cmd + I for italic.

Edit a message you sent

  3. The message now shows an (edited) label so people know it changed.

Remove a message you sent

  2. Click Remove, then confirm.
  3. The message is replaced with a "Message removed" note in the timeline.

Good to know

  • You can only edit and remove your own messages. Silo admins may be able to remove other people's messages for moderation.
  • "Removed" isn't the same as "never sent." Removing hides the content for everyone going forward, but anyone who already saw it may have read or copied it.
  • Editing keeps history. The (edited) label stays on the message; some people can view the edit history.
  • Mentions need the person to be in the conversation. You can only @-mention people who are already members of that silo.
  • Forwarding sends a fresh copy. The message is re-sent into the target conversation. It stays encrypted, but everyone in that conversation can now see it — forward with care.
  • Formatting uses simple styles. Letro supports bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, code blocks, and quotes — not full document formatting.
