Change your password

Update the password you use to sign in to Letro, or find out where to change it if you sign in with Google.

Security note: Changing your password does not change or reset your encryption keys or your recovery key. Your messages stay encrypted and readable as before. If you're changing your password because you think someone else may have access to your account, also review your active sessions and sign out any device you don't recognize.

Before you start: which kind of account do you have?

  • PostNumber (or username) and password — you sign in with your PostNumber and a password. Follow the steps below to change it inside Letro.
  • Sign in with Google — you sign in by tapping Sign in with Google. Your password is managed by Google, not by Letro, so Letro has no password for you to change. To change it, update your Google Account password instead (see Good to know).

On Web & Desktop

  1. Select your name or avatar in the top-left to open Settings.
  2. Go to Account (or Account & security).
  3. Select Change password.
  4. Enter your current password.
  5. Enter your new password, then type it again to confirm.
  6. Select Save (or Change password) to apply it.

On iOS

  1. Tap your avatar in the top-left, then open Settings.
  2. Tap Account (or Account & security).
  3. Tap Change password.
  4. Enter your current password.
  5. Enter your new password and confirm it.
  6. Tap Save to apply it.

On Android

  1. Tap your avatar in the top-left, then open Settings.
  2. Tap Account (or Account & security).
  3. Tap Change password.
  4. Enter your current password.
  5. Enter your new password and confirm it.
  6. Tap Save to apply it.

Good to know

  • You don't know your current password? Don't change it here — reset it instead. On the sign-in screen, select Forgot password? and follow the prompts to set a new one. See Recover your account.
  • Sign in with Google users: change your password in your Google Account, not in Letro. Go to your Google Account, open Security, and select Password. This updates how you sign in to Google everywhere, including Letro.
  • Choose a strong, unique password. Use one you don't reuse on other services. A password manager makes this easy.
  • After changing your password, you may stay signed in on your other devices. If your goal is to lock out a specific device, changing the password isn't enough on its own — sign that session out. See Manage your sessions and devices.
  • Your recovery key is separate. If you've lost access to encrypted messages, changing your password won't restore them — you need your recovery key. Keep it somewhere safe.
